Does chronic pain limit your lifestyle? If you feel pain radiating from your lower back (lumbar) region, down through your hips and buttocks and into one or both of your legs, you may be experiencing sciatica. Lower back pain and sciatica can be life changing, negatively impacting your lifestyle or otherwise. In most cases, the pain starts as tingling in the lower back or down your legs when you sit for too long. As the issue progresses, it can turn into an excruciating pain.

If you experience numbness, tingling, or even pain in your lower back and/or legs, Dr. McCombs’ free Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop in Lubbock is for you.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back, into your hips and buttocks, and continues down your legs. In most cases, it will affect one side of your body, but it can also affect both legs and the lower back simultaneously.

Common causes of sciatica could be:

  • Herniated disk
  • Bone spur
  • Spine stenosis (narrowing of the spine)

In any of the cases above, the pinching, compression, or irritation of the sciatica nerve can cause tingling, numbness, or various levels of pain.

When to See a Doctor?

The severity of your discomfort or pain should indicate when you need to see a doctor. In most cases, sciatica can be reversed naturally without surgery. In rare cases, surgery is necessary to relieve pain and remedy the condition.

Here are some sure signs you need to see a doctor as soon as possible:

  • Severe sudden pain in your lower back, hips, buttocks, or legs.
  • The pain directly follows a serious accident or other injury.
  • You begin to have trouble controlling your bowels or bladder.

Sciatica Risk Factors

The most common causes of sciatica correlate with age. Unfortunately, as our bodies age, we must take greater care of them to ensure less pain. This starts with our physical fitness, diet, and lifestyle choices.

The second most common risk factor involves obesity. Due to extra weight being carried around on the skeletal system and spine, pinched nerves and inflammation probability increases.

If you sit for prolonged periods of time, this can also affect your potential or current sciatica condition. The sitting position can increase the chances of nerve pinch or compression of nerves.

Finally, diabetes can be an indirect culprit to nerve damage. The way one’s body uses sugars does increase the chance of nerve harm.

Lower Back Pain Prevention

Sciatica is not always preventable; however, if you have the opportunity to naturally prevent or remedy it, you should take action. In most cases, regular exercise, proper posture while standing or sitting, and deploying good body mechanics while lifting or moving things help immensely in reducing nerve pinch or discomfort.

You can reverse sciatica based pain, if you catch it early enough and work to remedy the condition on a consistent basis.

If you’re feeling tingling, numbness, or pain in your lower back, hips, buttocks, or legs, contact McCombs & Associates Physical Therapy. They hold monthly workshops to help those managing sciatica and lower back pain in an effort to naturally reverse the condition and avoid invasive surgery.
